Xavier Montessori School
Montessori
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
by Benjamin Franklin
INTRODUCTION
Xavier International Montessori School is a registered school providing a stimulating and positive learning environment for pre-school students from 18months to 6 years of age. Small classes ensure personalised guidance and attention. The students belong to a small harmonious community and there is recognition of each child’s individual needs and learning style.
Education at the Xavier International Montessori School offers your child an opportunity to develop independence, self-confidence and self esteem. The program encourages the development of personal responsibility, thinking processes and encourages a love of learning.
Designed to nurture in the child over time, the overall purpose of a Montessori education is to support our students to become:
Confident - to be able to put them forward when necessary, offering skills they have, or taking on responsibilities.
Caring - become aware of the needs of others, and have the ability to use these needs with wisdom, kindness and empathy.
Conscientious - to be able to organise time and resources to best meet educational needs.
Courteous - to have consideration for others and be able to adjust their behaviour to show respect and manners appropriate to every situation.
Considerate - to think of others' needs as well as their own.
Competent - to be able to achieve the chosen tasks and complete them to a satisfactory level. The student will also be able to evaluate the success of the task against aims, processes and outcomes.
WHAT MAKES MONTESSORI DIFFERENT FROM OTHER EDUCATION?
The child learns and is motivated through the work of themselves (not solely the teacher) to persist in a given task. Each child has their own individual program suited to its particular personality and needs. Each child receives individual attention, wherever possible and certainly wherever needed, all instruction is one on one or in small groups of similar ability. One of the most important advantages is that each child can and does work at its own pace. Children are expected to work, and there is no competitiveness, only the child’s own drive and desire to learn. The child is neither pressured to keep up with others, nor bored by having to wait for others to catch up, consequently the child is happy to learn and come to school.
The principles we follow
Our Course follows the principles laid down by our founder and validated by current educational research:
Children are individuals profoundly affected by society and the immediate environment. Every child is born with creative potential, the drive to learn and the right to be treated as an individual.
Specially prepared environments, in school and at home, help to develop the child's natural potential. |
Children must be given freedom to work and move around within suitable guidelines that enable them to act as part of a social group. |
Children should be provided with specifically designed materials which help them to explore their world and enable them to develop essential cognitive skills. |
Course Content
Montessori philosophy: child development; building the human personality; the laws of psychological growth; the successive phases of development and characteristics.
Montessori theory: the role and attitude of the Montessori teacher; the preparation of a Montessori environment, along with the integrated study of how to develop each child’s potential. |
The five areas of learning
Practical Life: The skills of daily life
These activities are the 'beginning point' in a Montessori environment. They are designed to develop independence, confidence, social awareness, care of the environment, motor coordination and concentration.
Sensorial: exploring the world
The Sensorial activities are another central element of Montessori education. They help to refine the senses, allowing the child to detect and understand differences in colour, weight, texture, size, sound, etc. |
Language: from spoken to written
Including speaking, listening, reading, writing, spelling, grammar, prose and poetry appreciation. |
Mathematics: from concrete to abstract
The child learns to understand number in a concrete way through handling the 3D materials. This gradually leads to a more symbolic appreciation of number. The curriculum includes counting skills, measuring, sorting, an understanding of the decimal system, addition, subtraction, division, multiplication and geometry. |
Culture: integrated into life
In the Montessori environment the child is exposed to various cultural subjects (geography, history, natural science, music and art) to feed their imagination and understanding of the world around them. By being introduced to different cultures and life styles, the children’s moral and intellectual nature is elevated resulting in enlightenment and enjoyment of each other’s cultures. The cultural activities also help the child to understand their role in the world and that they are in fact, a very important part of the whole system. |
